Peruse Peru - from Iquitos to the Amazon
It is rare to encounter a place today where you are truly cut off from communicating with the rest of the world. Attached to my phone like most everyone else, I find it almost impossible to go more than a few hours without checking in on the latest texts, emails or tagged pictures I might have missed while away.
Sometimes it takes going deep into the jungle to disconnect and to see if these incomunicada spots still exist.
Aerial view of El Río Amazonas. Not many cell phone towers down there
And I assure you they do! For four days we turned our phones off and let the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of the Amazon rainforest take over. Tan tranquila, an experience I will never forget.
Into Iquitos
Motorbike taxi into town after we landed in Iquitos from Lima
We out here!
Apparently the river tide usually comes up to cover this boat during rainy season. Locals were saying this is the lowest they've seen the river in many years.
Swinging in the Zon
From Iquitos to our lodge on El Río Mazán
Starr (the owner), me and Jenna taking one of two boats from the larger port in Iquitos to our small lodge on the Mazán River. Total travel time took about three hours
El Río Mazán
Silver linings approaching
Abundancia EcoLodge
Front porch of our own personal little cabin
View from the top of the lodge stairs overlooking the floating dock and boats
Piranha fishing! 2 for Jenna...
0 for Cez ;( except if you're counting the one that bit the bait and then flew off my pole mid-reel
Afternoon hangouts. When we weren't paddling around in our canoe checking out spider monkeys or pink dolphins, we were swinging in hammocks, practicing yoga on the deck or dining on fresh fish, vegetables and fruit juices.
Jungle time
Covered head to toe
Into the woods with Miguel and his machete to cut the path and lead the way. Miguel was raised as a hunter on the nearby Napo River and knew everything there was to know about the jungle
Learning of the endless plant medicines that exist in the rainforest. There was a tree sap or bark for every type of ailment- oral infections, fevers, malaria, dehydration, you name it
Sunsets on the Zon
Ciao until next time!
Me, Jenna, plus the entire crew of Abundancia EcoLodge - Miguel, Starr, Natividad & Lucho
